On the 22nd of August, Green MSP and Scottish Minister Patrick Harvie was heckled during an interview in Rutherglen. Since the clip was aired, and in true Scottish Greens fashion, the man responsible for the heckling has been branded a homophobe. He’s been accused of abusing Mr Harvie and of hatred based on Harvie’s sexuality. None of these things are of course true. Instead of reading the room, or the country in this case, Harvie and the Greens have minced into battle stations and cried abuse. They’ve again failed to take into account that their pushing of Queer Theory - a deviant movement - is unsurprisingly unpopular with the majority of Scots.
Back in 2021, a former Scottish Greens list MSP spoke to Holyrood Magazine about the party and its Queer Theory connections. Andy Wightman, the former list MSP for Lothian, resigned from the party due to its stance on the Forensic Medical Services (Victims of Sexual Offences) (Scotland) Bill. The Bill, as proposed at the time, inserted gender in place of sex and would’ve caused victims of sexual violence further trauma. A women who had been raped, for example, might have been examined by a male who said he was a woman. The Bill was thankfully amended due to the hard work of women’s rights organisations in Scotland. In the interview with Holyrood Magazine, Mr Wightman said that the reasons for some of the confusion around language in the Scottish Greens was coming from Queer Theory.
Queer Theory is academic perspective that seeks to challenge heteronormative identities and look at them through a ‘queer’ lens. Even writing that last sentence was a struggle for me. To the non-academic mind, such as mine, it’s clear that it’s a frankly bizarre indulgence for people who have far too much time on their hands and not enough real life issues to care about. It is, however, far more sinister than just the above.
Many of todays proponents of the theory are heavily influence by French philosopher Michel Foucault. Foucault was a vile man. He argued that children could consent to sex with adults of any age. In 1977, he petitioned the French Parliament to decriminalise all ‘consensual sex’ with minors and adults. He raped children in Tunisia in the 60s. The list goes on and on. For a breakdown of Queer Theory which also mentions Foucault, I’d recommended reading a Twitter thread by Malcolm Clark which breaks it all down far better than I could even dream of doing. It can here found here.
With the constant barrage of queer theory policies pushed by the Greens, it isn’t hard to see why someone might call the co-leader of the party a deviant. It isn’t a stretch. It isn’t abusive. It’s a fairly useful and accurate definition of the man we see in front of us.
This is especially true given the company Mr Harvie has kept over the years. Guilt by association? I struggle to see that as an excuse. There are questions that have long been ignored by journalists and by the man himself. Why did Mr Harvie not give back the award he was given that was named after a co-founder of the Paedophile Information Exchange? Why did he continually praise James Rennie - the founder and ex CEO of LGBT Youth Scotland and now imprisoned paedophile? Why was he pictured with John Hein - a paedo rights activist and co-founder of Pride Edinburgh? Did he continue his acquaintance with Gordon Pike? A fellow member of the board of the now defunct Glasgow Gay and Lesbian Centre who went on to help set trans prison guidance in Scotland before being jailed for child rape materials? All of this is documented in a thread I wrote on twitter which can be found here.
I don’t think these are unreasonable questions for an elected member of the Scottish Parliament - albeit a Scottish Greens list candidate. I’d even settle for the press asking if the Greens support Queer Theory. If they do, as the former Green MSP suggests, the public deserve to know why they’re supporting it. They also shouldn’t then be prosecuted for accurately describing what the movement is and for calling those pushing it deviants. The mess we’re currently stuck in here in Scotland is telling. A woman was assaulted by a trans activist in Aberdeen and the police take no action. A man calls out deviance and is arrested and charged. It’s time those in power woke up to this madness and put a stop to this authoritarian deviant Governemnt and its failure to protect its citizens while simultaneously punishing those who challenge it.
So true, Sam. No queer theory in Scotland. Thanks for all you do to defend LGB people. 💝
Hi Sam! Great piece and spot on regarding Harvey! 👍
